Date: Jan. 11, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Steve Stivers (R -- Columbus) today announced he was returning $100,000 from his Congressional budget and giving it back to the government. Stivers is currently serving his first term in Congress.

"Across this state and nation families are prioritizing their own budgets and making the tough choices to make ends meet," Stivers said. "Congress must learn to do the same and do more with less."

In addition to returning $100,000, Stivers also voluntarily returns $700 from each of his paychecks to pay down the national debt and he cut his office budget by five percent at the beginning of 2011.

In his first year in office, Stivers has also continued his focus on outstanding and timely constituent service and district outreach. Stivers participated in 247 meetings, events, and tours in the district in 2011, and his field staff attended an additional 282 meetings and events last year on Stivers' behalf. He also participated in an additional 325 meetings, with a total of 1,300 constituents, in Washington D.C. and the D.C. staff met with another 250 people from the district.

This year, the Stivers office received 599 total cases from constituents. As of December 1, 2011, 505 of the total cases received had been completed and closed.

Constituents are able to directly e-mail, mail, or call the office and receive responses to questions about legislation, Stivers' stances on policies and issues before Congress, and other issues that are most important to them. A total of 42,750 timely responses were sent out of the Stivers office by December 1, 2011.
