Hagan Efforts Help Delay Post Office Closures

United States Senator Kay R. Hagan (NC) applauded the decision of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to delay until mid-May 2012 the closing of 3,700 post offices and 252 mail processing centers. According to the USPS announcement, their decision came in response to multiple requests from U.S. Senators, including a letter to the Postmaster General from Sen. Hagan.

"The delay gives us in Congress the opportunity to study this problem more closely," said Hagan. "Post offices in our North Carolina rural areas provide more than just stamps and package pick-up services, they are gathering centers and lifelines for these communities. Most importantly this delay will help protect American jobs."

Following the USPS announcement on July 26 that 20 North Carolina Post Offices face potential closure, U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (NC) sent a letter to the Postmaster General urging the USPS to give her North Carolina constituents a full opportunity to voice their concerns before any final decisions are made. Hagan staff have participated in numerous USPS community hearings throughout the state over the past five months.
