Marino: `Americans Deserve Better'

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Tom Marino, PA-10, on Friday said the decline in the national unemployment rate is welcome news but expressed concern about the hidden message behind the report.

Marino acknowledged the national unemployment rate had dropped to 8.6 percent in November but said the mounting despair among Americans is most troubling.

"More than 300,000 people stopped looking for a job last month," Marino said. "To think that so many Americans have given up hope is absolutely disheartening. We owe our citizens much more than that. They deserve so much more."

Marino said the key to job creation is to create an environment that makes it more suitable for entrepreneurs and small business owners to expand.

"We can do that by getting the federal government in order -- by tackling the debt and deficit, downsizing Washington, cutting federal spending and keeping taxes low. If we do that, and refrain from burdensome regulations, the job creators will be able to grow and hire more workers."

Marino said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid can take a big step toward tackling the high unemployment rate by putting the 25 bi-partisan, House-passed jobs bills up for a vote in the Senate.

"President Obama can show real leadership by challenging the Senate to vote on these job-creating measures," Marino said. "It is apparent that it is more important to him to keep his job than to create jobs for Americans.

"It is unfortunate that at a time when we need leadership most that our president is in politics-mode," Marino said. "He is using the numbers to tell half the story and is ignoring the large number of people who have given up entirely."
