Representative Mike Kelly Issues Statement on the Super Committee's Failure to Reach a Deficit Reduction Agreement

Statement

Date: Nov. 21, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Representative Mike Kelly (PA-03) issued the following statement in response to today's announcement by the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction that it failed to agree to at least $1.2 trillion in cuts from annual budget deficits over a period of 10 years:

"The super committee's inability to reach an agreement is disappointing, but symptomatic of the political climate in Washington. Both political parties have contributed to our nation's $15 trillion debt, and it's up to both parties to get us out of it.

"I commend Senator Toomey for putting forward a plan that was full of common-sense solutions, and regret that his colleagues on the committee did not share his vision of tax and entitlement reform that would work to raise revenues and secure the future of some of our most treasured social safety-net programs.

"Our nation's debt is a serious threat to this and future generations of Americans. If we don't right the ship now, we are headed for further economic uncertainty and prolonged periods of record unemployment.

"As our nation comes together this week to give thanks for our abundant blessings, may we remain grateful for the free and democratic political process that we have, and hopeful that despite our differences, we will rise to meet the challenges before us with a steadfast commitment that transcends partisanship and inspires within us all a renewed belief in America and our ability to, as always, get the job done."
