Congressman Cantor: If The President Is For Middle Class Tax Relief & Job Creation, He Should Support Our Bill

Press Conference

Date: Dec. 13, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

"We are going to bring a bill to the floor today that helps middle class families, provides some tax relief and creates jobs. Many of us saw the President on 60 Minutes on Sunday and I was struck by how many times he actually talked about the need to keep taxes low for the middle class. I would hope that his rhetoric begins to match reality. Because you can't be for the middle class, you can't be for keeping taxes low, and be against our Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act.

"If the President said he wants to make sure that we create jobs, and he wants to be there for the middle class, that's what this bill does. It creates tens of thousands of jobs, if not more. If the President said he wants to protect Social Security and its trust fund from being raided, that's what this bill does as well. The President also said that we can't wait. Exactly Mr. President, we can't wait.

"That's why we're putting forward this bill, to make sure that we are there for the middle class of this country, providing that taxes won't go up on them, and providing a path for job creation. The President is fond of saying that in his proposal there are provisions that both Republicans and Democrats support. That's exactly what we've got in this bill. Look the House Republican Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act is not our dream proposal, but it is and it does represent a middle ground. We ask the President to join us in finally putting himself behind this bill to help the middle class, it's time for the President to compromise as well."
