Believing that fiscal responsibility begins at home, Rep. Cory Gardner (R-CO) praised the House GOP Majority Transition Team for its success in changing the way Congress works. The committee enacted reforms to make the House operate more efficiently, leading to a $227 million cut from Congress's own budget. Gardner was appointed to the Transition Committee shortly after the 2010 election and helped lead the effort to cut Congressional budgets.

"As families and small businesses were learning to do more with less, it was important to us that the new Congress led by example and cut its own budget," Gardner said. "As a result of our action, we will cut $227 million from the legislative operating budget. Remember, this is just one small piece of government, but if every branch and every department could also tighten its belt, we just might be able to make some real progress reducing our debt."

The cost savings has been achieved in part by cutting official budgets of all House leaders, committees and members, by over 10 percent, and by a change in management structure.
