Dreier Delivers Statement on Historic Egyptian Parliamentary Election

Location: Cairo, Egypt

Congressman David Dreier (R-CA), Chairman of the House Rules Committee and the House Democracy Partnership, delivered the following statement today at the Gazeera Youth Center in Cairo at the conclusion of the first round of the country's historic parliamentary elections. Chairman Dreier led a bipartisan Congressional delegation of observers for the nation's first post-revolution democratic election.

"This is a great day in Egypt's 7,000-year history. I am in Cairo to lead a bipartisan delegation from the United States Congress to watch these momentous elections unfold. It was an inspiration to witness Egyptians from all walks of life lining up to cast their ballots and for the first time play a role in determining the future of their great country.

"While there had been concern and fear before the elections, the voters and judges I met were generally pleased with how well the process went. We should recognize that this is an important first step in a multi-stage process. Egypt appears to have done well under challenging economic and political circumstances.

"The vote count is now underway. I look forward to closely following the next steps in this election as Egypt continues down the path to a representative democracy."
