U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) cosponsored an amendment Nov. 29 requiring the Defense Department to prepare for a full financial audit of the DoD in 2017. The amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012 is sponsored by Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.).

The DoD, which receives hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars each year, has never undergone a full financial audit. Such an audit is vital to prevent waste, fraud and abuse, improve government accountability and transparency, and help ensure that taxpayer dollars are being well spent.

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) is also a co-sponsor of the amendment.

"This legislation would hold the Defense Department accountable for its finances and further encourage responsible government. At a time of soaring national debt, it is only fair that a federal agency which spends more than half a trillion dollars a year should be required to put its fiscal house in order and account for taxpayer dollars," Sen. Toomey said.
