Today, I cast my vote for the Balanced Budget Amendment (BBA) along with 260 of my colleagues. Our nation's debt is fast becoming a major threat to our long-term fiscal and national security and we need bold solutions to get our fiscal house in order. The BBA is but one tool that we need to ensure that future generations are not saddled with a crippling debt burden. It would force Congress to prioritize spending and look honestly at cutting government waste.
This was an opportunity to do great things in a bipartisan way for the good of our country. Unfortunately, ninety percent of House Democrats decided to oppose passage of the BBA. We have a spending problem, not a revenue problem. The American people do not believe we should raise taxes to pay for more government spending. As a nation, we cannot turn our fiscal fortunes around unless Congress gets serious about making tough choices and balances the budget.
I do believe a BBA is the one way that we can truly slow the growth of government and cut spending. Balancing the budget should not be a controversial issue. I hope my colleagues who opposed the BBA will reconsider their opposition and come to grips with the reality of our budget situation.
Sincerely,
Congressman Kenny Marchant
