Huelskamp Lauds Passage of "National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act" (H.R. 822)

Statement

Today the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 822, the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011, which allows individuals with valid state-issued concealed firearm permits to carry their firearms in other states that allow concealed carry; it does not allow individuals with concealed carry permits to utilize those permits in states that prohibit concealed carry. There are 245 total cosponsors from both sides of the aisle.

"Today Congress promoted the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans and the Tenth Amendment rights of our states," Congressman Huelskamp said. "In the same way that states recognize other states' drivers' licenses, this will allow states to accept concealed carry permits from other states. It respects and maintains the laws of individual states where concealed carry is not permitted; does not override any individual state's law; and requires individuals to abide by the concealed carry laws of the state in which they are carrying. It is my hope that eventually all states will extend the right to carry concealed weapons to their law-abiding citizens."

Congress has previously passed legislation to allow certain active-duty and retired law enforcement officers to carry concealed weapons in other states. H.R. 822 extends the same privilege to all law-abiding citizens.
