Statement on Failure of Supercommittee

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Joe Donnelly released the following statement after it was widely reported that the members of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, commonly known as the supercommittee, have failed to come to an agreement.

"The supercommittee failed because too many people in Washington had drawn lines in the sand even before this debate got underway. I am very disappointed that members of the supercommittee couldn't look past party politics and do what is right for this country. It is unfortunate that the opportunity to come to a grand, bipartisan agreement--something we all hoped the supercommittee would do--was lost. Americans deserve better from the Congress.

"The reality is that compromise and bipartisanship are always going to be required when the issue is as important as the fiscal future of the United States. I remain dedicated to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle on common sense proposals that get our economy moving again while ensuring a healthier fiscal future."
