Representative DesJarlais Votes for National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011

Statement

Representative Scott DesJarlais (TN-04) today voted in favor of H.R. 822, the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011. This legislation would allow any person with a valid state-issued concealed firearm permit to carry a concealed firearm in any state that issues concealed firearm permits, or that does not prohibit the carrying of concealed firearms. Under this legislation, a state's laws governing where concealed firearms may be carried will apply within that state's borders. Additionally, this legislation would not create a federal licensing system; rather, it would simply require the states to recognize each others' carry permits.

Representative DesJarlais issued the following statement upon passage of this legislation in the United States House of Representatives.

"Our constitution clearly states that in this country we have a fundamental right to keep and bear arms. Protecting our Second Amendment rights was a key promise that I made during my campaign for Congress and I'm pleased that the House has passed this legislation, which I have cosponsored.

"It is my hope that the Senate will join us in our effort in creating a more uniform process for citizens to carry as they cross state lines.

"Certainly, I'm proud to have supported today's legislation, but I do think it is a shame that a legislative fix is even required for something that is so clearly stated as a right in our Constitution. Be that as it may, I'll continue my efforts in strengthening our Second Amendment rights through the legislative branch."
