Congress Has Not Been Waiting to Combat Drug Shortages

Location: Unknown

Early this week, the President directed the Food and Drug Administration to take various steps to prevent critical drug shortages. While he said that these actions were necessary because Congress isn't working on them, the Health Subcommittee has been investigating the issue of drug shortages for months. In fact, just a few weeks ago, I chaired a hearing to discuss the problem and consider bipartisan solutions. The executive order really only reiterates the powers that the FDA currently has, it won't really get to the heart of the problem. I'm continuing to work across party lines to find ways to prevent shortages. I'm disappointed that the President has politicized this issue and failed to put out a real solution.
