U.S. Congresswoman Nan Hayworth, M.D., (NY-19) issued the following statement today regarding the latest unemployment report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The economy gained just 80,000 new jobs in October, well below what economists expected. This week a new study conducted by Pew revealed nearly 32% of the 14 million Americans who are unemployed have been jobless for a year or more.
The U.S. has also had 28 straight months with unemployment nine percent or higher:
"This month's unemployment report is the latest reminder that the policies of this Administration simply aren't working when it comes to getting Americans back to work. The fact is that payrolls must gain approximately 125,000 new jobs every month just to keep the unemployment rate stable. My number one priority is to assure that people in the Hudson Valley have the employment opportunities they need and that the regulatory environment for small businesses supports investment and job creation.
"Right now, more than 15 job-creating bills that the House has passed with participation and votes from both Democrats and Republicans remain stalled in the Senate. The American people can't wait--and the Senate should stop delaying action on these important measures."
