New Jersey's property taxes are the highest in the nation. In part, this is due to our failure to apply the income tax to property tax reduction, as called for in the state Constitution. I support Senator Michael Doherty's Fair School Funding Act, which would rebalance the excessive aid now going to urban school districts. It accomplishes this by amending the Constitution to define a fair school funding formula, by equalizing state aid to every student. The current system provides as much as 81 times more aid to a student in Asbury Park than to a student in Madison. Under the Fair School Funding Act, 85 percent of all districts across the state -- and ALL 14 municipalities in the 27th Legislative District -- would receive significant reductions in their property taxes.
