Brown, Job Creators Press Senate To Pass 3% Withholding Repeal

Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Taxes

Today, U.S. Senator Scott Brown (R-MA), the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and businesses in support of passing the 3 percent withholding repeal held a press conference to step up pressure on leaders in the U.S. Senate to bring up the bipartisan jobs bill for a vote. Originally introduced by Senator Brown, the U.S. House last week passed a version of the repeal after receiving President Obama's endorsement.

"Today we're calling on leaders of both parties in the U.S. Senate to bring this jobs bill to the floor for a clean vote. Currently, this is the only jobs legislation that has bipartisan majorities in both chambers as well as the President's support. There should be no delay and no partisan gimmicks," said Senator Brown. "When the House passed this bill last week, we were reminded that Congress can choose to overcome the gridlock. We have proof that jobs legislation can pass if constructed in good faith and across party lines. The Senate must move on this bipartisan bill now and give our small businesses and contractors a chance to create some new jobs."

"The trucking industry is very appreciative of the efforts of Senator Brown to repeal this tax. Typical median profit margin for a carrier or broker in government traffic is about 0.5% to 1.5%, elimination of this tax restores the industry to a profitable level of service," said Anne Lynch, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Motor Transportation Association, who offered support for the repeal from Massachusetts in lieu of attending today's press conference in Washington.

"Last week's bipartisan vote in the House to repeal the burdensome 3% withholding tax mandate was further proof that lawmakers from both parties can work together to help get our economy back on track," said Giovanni Coratolo, Vice President of Small Business Policy for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. "Now it is time for the Senate to follow suit. If it is not repealed, the 3% withholding tax will have a dramatic, negative impact on honest taxpaying businesses across the United States hurting their ability to create jobs. Repeal will provide greater certainty for businesses, doctors, farmers, state and local governments, and colleges and universities."
