Issue Position: Fiscal Responsibility

I have always believed that your tax dollars are sacred, and that government has a responsibility to provide core services in an efficient and effective manner. Eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse in government is a top priority of mine - it is very important to keep a close eye on how the people's money is being spent.

I am proud that in Virginia the state constitution requires the General Assembly to balance its budget, and does not allow us to run up spending deficits the way congress has in Washington. This feature of our government forces us to make some difficult choices in tough economic times, but it has also laid the groundwork for Virginia to be named the best managed state and best state for business for much of the past decade.

In addition to keeping taxes low, however, we must make investments in the things that make our Commonwealth great if we expect to continue to improve the lives of all Virginians. Wise spending to improve public education, conserve our natural resources, and maintain our transportation infrastructure is vital to keeping Virginia an attractive place for families and businesses.
