Preserving Flexibility and Choice in School Meal Programs

Healthy eating habits start with an understanding that how you prepare your food can be just as important as what food you choose to eat. Potatoes and other starchy vegetables like corn are no exception. That's why I fought for a bipartisan amendment that was successfully included in the agriculture appropriations bill to prevent unnecessary government limits on the amount of starchy vegetables that schools can serve. I want schools to have the flexibility they need to provide nutritious, locally sourced meals to schoolchildren while working within tight budgets. It was a triple win: children will continue get access to potatoes, which are full of fiber and potassium; schools will keep the flexibility needed to plan school lunches; and we'll continue supporting home-grown food and Colorado jobs
