Representative Mike Kelly (PA-03) voted today in support of H.R. 2309, the Oversight Committee Postal Reform Act of 2011, which was approved by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform by a vote of 22-18. Rep. Kelly issued the following statement:

"The U.S. Postal Service provides an invaluable service to the American people, and today I voted to put in place comprehensive and immediate reform measures that will save this great American institution from imminent financial ruin. Today's vote also extended appeal rights currently offered to large post offices pending closure to smaller post office branches and stations.

"Considering the profound economic challenges facing our nation right now, we can no longer afford to put off making the difficult decisions we need to make, wishing away our problems in the vain hope that they will somehow just go away.

"The reality is that the Postal Service spent more than $8 billion than it brought in last year, and has an outdated business model that fails to meet 21st century realities. The USPS has no choice but to develop a new and financially viable business model that will make it more efficient and, ultimately, sustainable."
