Governor Corbett Applauds Passage of Senate Bill 1

Governor Tom Corbett today thanked members of the state Senate for passing an education reform bill that will help improve the way children learn in Pennsylvania.

An amended Senate Bill 1, which was voted out of the education committee with bipartisan support on Tuesday, passed this afternoon by a vote of 27 to 22. The measure now moves to the House of Representatives for further consideration.

"I want to commend the members of the state Senate for passing a strong education reform package that will help improve opportunities for thousands of school children throughout Pennsylvania,'' Corbett said.

Earlier this month, Corbett outlined his plan for education reform, including providing opportunity scholarships to low-income students in low-performing schools, enhancing educational improvement tax credits, strengthening the Charter School Law and ensuring accountability through rigorous teacher evaluations.

Corbett commended members of the Senate, particularly Sen. Jeffrey Piccola (R-Dauphin) and Sen. Anthony Williams (D-Philadelphia), for this vote and their leadership in this first step toward enacting a strong education reform package.

"I look forward to continuing to work with members of the General Assembly to enact critical education reforms,'' Corbett said.
