Berg Statement on Signing of Job-Creating Free Trade Agreements

Statement

Date: Oct. 21, 2011
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Trade

Congressman Rick Berg today issued the following statement after President Obama signed the three job-creating trade agreements with Colombia, Panama and South Korea:

"These trade agreements hold tremendous potential for our state and nation," Berg stated. "By signing these agreements, the United States has sent a clear signal that we are serious about expanding our markets and increasing opportunity for our small businesses. In North Dakota, we know that jobs come from small business--not big government--and we've seen the benefits that come from a renewed commitment to trade. These agreements will help spur economic growth and will empower our small businesses to create more good American jobs--two things that our economy desperately needs right now."

The President submitted the long-awaited free trade agreements with South Korea, Panama and Colombia to Congress on Monday, October 3. Two days later, the agreements were marked up by the House Ways and Means Committee and passed through committee with bipartisan support. Both the House and Senate passed the agreements with bipartisan support last week.
