Rep. Mulvaney Statement on Latest Unemployment Report

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Congressman Mick Mulvaney today released the following statement on the most recent report from the Labor Department, which showed unemployment stuck at 9.1% with little job growth:

"Yesterday, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi praised the 2009 stimulus as "a success in terms of job creation,' though it wasn't "fully appreciated.' But I think we fully appreciate an unemployment rate that has been stuck at 9.1 percent for the last three months.

"We face extreme economic uncertainty. This week I questioned Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, and he warned that the economic recovery was "close to faltering.' In fact, the economic recovery has stalled and President Obama's economic policies have failed. It has been 32 consecutive months that the unemployment rate has been at or above 8 percent. Over 14 million Americans are unemployed and millions more are underemployed. We face an unemployment crisis unlike anything we have seen for quite some time.

"We need to remove government barriers for job creation in the private sector, so that businesses start hiring again. We have already experienced a trillion-dollar "stimulus' spending spree--and the Obama jobs plan would simply be a second stimulus. It is important that Washington doesn't enact legislation that does more harm than good. Or we will have little hope for improvement anytime soon."
