During the 2010 regular session of the Louisiana Legislature, Representative J. Rogers Pope authored and presented a Constitutional Amendment to be considered by voters statewide that would assist disabled veterans by increasing the homestead exemption for 100 percent disabled veterans, if approved by parish voters.

This amendment will benefit veterans with a 100 percent disability by exempting them from property taxes if their home is worth less than $150,000. The exemption would apply to spouses of deceased veterans.

This amendment was approved by voters in all 64 parishes to assist veterans with a 100 percent disability. The voters of each parish will have to approve a local ordinance for veterans in their parish.

The men and women who serve in the Armed Forces of the United States of America are among the most important people in our country. These brave men and women provide all of us with the security and peace of mind that we enjoy in the United States unlike any other country in the world. It is important that we recognize those who are currently serving and those who have served in the past and often at great personal sacrifice.
