Mack Again Puts Obama Administration on Record Confirming Insurgency in Mexico

Press Release

Date: Oct. 13, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

During a Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on Emerging Threats and Security in the Western Hemisphere, Chairman of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee Connie Mack (FL-14) again placed Obama Administration officials on the record confirming Mexican cartels are carrying out terror-based insurgent activities.

During the hearing, Assistant Secretary of State William Brownfield stated, "You know what I'm going to respond Mr. Chairman because you already got me to commit to this last week in this very same room. I do acknowledge that many of the facts on the ground, the things that are being done by those organizations, are consistent with what we would call either terrorism or insurgency in other countries." Assistant Secretary of Defense Paul Stockton, also confirmed that the threats from our own Hemisphere have evolved, are more severe, and that more can be done.

Mack stated: "Not wanting to address the real threat creates opportunity for those wishing to do harm to the United States and other countries in Latin America. What we have seen over the past couple of days with the assassination plot against the Saudi Arabian Ambassador to the United States -- highlights the work of our committee in defining what is happening in Mexico with the cartels as an insurgency that uses terrorist activities to further its cause. If you are unwilling to identify the problem correctly then you are unable to properly put a policy forward to help combat it."

Chairman Mack's opening statement can be viewed on the link below, the entire hearing can be found on the House Foreign Affairs Committee website.
