Congressman John Fleming, M.D. issued the following statement calling on Iran to release Iranian Christian Minister Youcef Nadarkhani immediately and vindicate him of all charges. Youcef Nadarkhani, a father and pastor, has been sentenced to death on charges of apostasy and attempting to convert Muslims to Christianity.
"It is appalling to me that this man was imprisoned, put through a sham trial, and could be hung for his faith. I call on the Iranian government to unconditionally release Pastor Youcef, clear him of all charges, and afford him the right to worship freely. It is time for the Iranian government to uphold the internationally recognized human right of freedom of religion. Regrettably, the Iranian regime has turned to fear, intimidation, oppression, and persecution of those who dare to profess the Christian faith," said Congressman Fleming.
Congressman Fleming added, "It is sad that in an Islamic dominant country like Iran, a man's life is in danger merely because he wishes to practice another religion. Other countries around the world, including the United States, which is predominantly Christian, allow peoples of different faiths to worship as they see fit. It is time Iran did the same."
Dr. John Fleming is Chairman of the Natural Resources Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, Oceans and Insular Affairs and is a member of the House Armed Services Committee. He is a physician and small business owner and represents the 4th Congressional District of Louisiana.
