U.S. Congressman Austin Scott (GA-08) joined Georgia's House Republican delegation and Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) for a press conference in Atlanta today on House Republican efforts for a Balanced Budget Amendment. Rep. Scott's remarks are below.
"The one thing I'll tell you about the eighty-nine Members of the Freshman Republican class is that we have more than 300 children and grandchildren. It is simply not fair to pass this debt down to them. One of our jobs is to protect the economic opportunities of the next generation and we believe the Balance Budget [Amendment] does that.
"One of the things I'd also ask you to keep in mind is that once we pass it in Washington, it simply sends it to the states and gives the people the opportunity to have a bigger voice in whether or not we as the elected officials in Congress have to abide by that Balanced Budget Amendment. So the people get to speak on it again even after we pass it."
