Kingston Urges Georgians to Speak Out About Balanced Budget Amendment

Press Release

Date: Sept. 22, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

As part of the debt limit deal signed into law in August, Congress must vote on a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution by year's end. In advance of that vote, Congressman Jack Kingston (R-GA) is urging Georgians to use the America Speaking Out initiative to express their opinion.

"America Speaking Out gives everyone an opportunity to be heard," said Kingston. "As we approach this important vote, I hope everyone will weigh in and start a discussion about the need for fiscal restraint. Congress was just one vote short of passing a balanced budget amendment in 1995. Today we have the chance to get it right but only if everyone gets involved in the discussion."

Launched last year, America Speaking Out is aimed at creating a dialogue between the American people and their Congress. It gives anyone a platform to share their priorities and ideas for a national agenda.

While the website, located at www.AmericaSpeakingOut.com, can be used to discuss any topic, Kingston hopes his constituents will use it to discuss the balanced budget amendment. As an ardent supporter and cosponsor of the amendment, Kingston believes more discussion in advance of the previous votes could have assured passage.

"The national debt has increased nearly $10 trillion since that vote in 1995," Kingston said. "Can you imagine if it had been ratified then and we were not saddled with the crushing debt we face today?"

Those interested in participating should visit http://www.AmericaSpeakingOut.com/ to register their opinion and participate in the discussion.
