Linda Sánchez Statement on End of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

Statement

Date: Sept. 20, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Linda Sánchez issued the following statement regarding "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," which barred gays and lesbians from openly serving in the U.S. military. The discriminatory policy ends today after it was implemented seventeen years ago.

""Don't Ask, Don't Tell' was both counterproductive to our nation's security, as well as morally wrong. Today, we take the first step in healing the wounds caused by seventeen years of a damaging, discriminatory policy.

"I am hopeful that our country can turn the page on this injustice and forever lay to rest the ignorant belief that loving one's country is somehow based on whom you love. No longer will we jeopardize our military readiness or reduce our military's recruiting pool because of a wrongheaded policy.

"Gays and lesbians have always served our country with honor and distinction. I am gratified that we can now say to brave gay and lesbian service members that they can serve their country without hiding who they are."
