Congressman Tom Reed applauded President Obama signing the America Invents Act into law today. The Act reforms the U.S. patent system, which has not seen significant modification in more than 60 years. "This is long overdue," Reed said. "This will help American businesses as the economy of the 21st century evolves."

"If we want to remain a global leader in innovation, we must have modern patent laws," Reed said. "This is an important victory for economic development and jobs," he continued, pointing out that it currently takes more than three years on average to get a patent approved.

"Innovative businesses both in the 29th District and nationwide cannot afford to wait three years to expand and create the jobs and businesses of tomorrow," Reed observed. "This act greatly reduces that delay."

The America Invents Act also includes a provision that Reed championed which makes it much more difficult for malicious organizations to delay and misuse the patent process for the purpose of stealing intellectual property. "We have companies in Corning, Rochester, and around the district which are creating new products and technology," Reed said. "Protecting their patents and intellectual property is really an issue of protecting and creating local jobs."
