Rep. Blake Farenthold (TX-27) had the following comments on Kenneth Melson's decision to step down as the Acting Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF):
"As a member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and as a representative of a border district that has seen firsthand the violence caused by drug trafficking organizations, I have been actively engaged in the Congressional investigation into Operation Fast and Furious. I have repeatedly said that Operation Fast and Furious was an ill-conceived plan from the beginning that resulted in the loss of numerous lives on both sides of the border, including law enforcement personnel.
"Yesterday's announcement by ATF, that Acting Director Kenneth Melson will be reassigned is just too little too late. Congress must continue to investigate this failed operation to ensure that those responsible are exposed and held accountable for their actions. Further, we must work to ensure that necessary changes are made within the ATF and Department of Justice so that such an ill-conceived effort like Operation Fast and Furious is never repeated. "
