Congresswoman Hirono Statement on Obama Administration's Announcement on No Child Left Behind Reform

Location: Unknown

Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawaii), member of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, today released the following statement regarding the U.S. Department of Education's announcement that it will grant waivers to states to provide relief to schools struggling under the No Child Left Behind law:

"I applaud the Obama administration's action to strengthen our schools by providing relief from the Bush-era No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law. It is disappointing that the current Republican House Majority has pursued initiatives that enable resources to shift from poor and English learning students to more advantaged students, while also cutting funding for initiatives such as those that support school libraries. Every child deserves a quality education in this country and the Obama administration's decision is one step closer toward that ideal."
