Bono Mack Applauds Agreement Between EPA and Waste Handlers

Location: Washington, DC

After first raising public health concerns back in January, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) today applauded an agreement by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and waste handlers to eliminate noxious odors near Mecca or face financial penalties:

"The new agreement clearly provides some needed "teeth' to EPA's earlier order. While I remain concerned that this issue dragged on for more than seven months, I do believe that -- in the end -- this is a good and fair agreement which will help to protect public health for people living in and around Mecca. I applaud EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson for listening to my concerns and coming up with a responsible plan of action, but I will continue to monitor the situation closely."
