New Study on Hunger in Ohio Underscores Need to Protect Vital Nutrition Programs

Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) today expressed her deep concern that despite findings of a recent report by the Food Research and Action Center, important federal nutrition programs continue to be targeted for cuts. The Food Research Center found that more than 1 in 4 Ohio households with children did not have enough money to buy food in the past 12 months. The study also determined that the 11th District of Ohio, which the Congresswoman represents, is tied for 22nd in the nation for households with children that have the highest rates of food hardship.

"It's unconscionable that some Members of Congress continue to seek long term budget cuts on the backs of hungry children, seniors and other vulnerable members of our community," said Congresswoman Fudge. "I see the need every time I return home. Thirty-five percent of the people served by the Cleveland Food Bank are children. More than 20% of my constituents receive SNAP (food stamp) benefits. I stand ready to oppose any cuts to nutrition programs and personally intend to use my office to support efforts to alleviate the nutrition crisis in our own backyard."

As part of her commitment to fight hunger, Congresswoman Fudge recently secured a donation from the Land-O-Lakes Corporation of nearly 40-thousand pounds of macaroni and cheese for the Cleveland Food Bank. While that quantity may seem substantial, Food Bank officials informed her during a visit on August 10th that amount would be distributed in just 4 days.
