Congressman Jo Bonner issued the following statement after the U.S. House passage of the Budget Control Act by a vote of 269 to 161 Monday evening.
"Today's vote represents a victory for all Americans who have been concerned about the years of unchecked spending in Washington," Congressman Bonner said.
"While the White House has been demanding a blank check to continue its overspending without any limitations, today the Congress tore up that blank check and has taken possession of the federal credit card that the American people are expected to pay.
"This bill is far from perfect but it will force a serious discussion on securing our long-term fiscal solvency while keeping America from defaulting on our debt.
"Just as important, it also requires a Congressional vote on a Balanced Budget Amendment by the end of the year.
"The very fact that this plan has been attacked by some of the biggest spenders in Congress means that it is already having an impact. Let's be clear. This plan is not the end, but it is an important first step -- the first in my lifetime -- toward putting the brakes on runaway spending."
