Statement on House Rejection of Senator Reid's Budget Control Act

Statement

Upon the defeat of H.R. 2693, Senator Reid's Budget Control Act, U.S. Congressman David Cicilline (D-RI) issued the following statement:

"While this legislation isn't perfect and contains some provisions I don't necessarily agree with, it is a strong step in the right direction on the path toward responsible cuts in spending while at the same time making sure we avoid a default crisis.

"It's a shame the majority of my Republican colleagues in the House refuse to compromise on a solution, especially when this plan incorporates ideas from both sides of the aisle.

"This plan saves Medicare and Social Security from benefit cuts, protects Pell Grants for our students and contains savings from ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"What's more, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office reports that this bill saves approximately $2.4 trillion. This is a responsible, long-term, compromise plan that would have avoided an economic catastrophe. I am disappointed that the majority of my Republican colleagues have rejected it."
