U.S. Rep. Karen Bass Statement on Budget Control Act of 2011

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Rep. Karen Bass released the following statement in support of the Budget Control Act of 2011:

"For too long, Republican hostage takers were prepared to launch the U.S. economy off the cliff, and President Obama alongside Democratic leaders put the brakes on that reckless agenda.

"This is not the deal that I wanted, but this is the deal that we have. We protected Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security despite Republican vows to end these entitlement programs our middle class families deserve. With Democrats fighting for our working families, Republicans demonstrated an outright hostility to the American values that our party champions. They demonstrated their loyalty to corporate America, to companies that ship jobs overseas, and to the wealthiest among us who are receiving tax breaks that were never asked for and are unnecessary.

"Today we voted to keep our economy from going off the cliff. Only President Obama and the Democratic Party have a plan to put the middle class back to work and get our country back on track."
