Republican Default Bill A Sneak Attack on Medicare, Social Security

Statement

Date: July 29, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Shelley Berkley today released the following statement on her opposition to the House Republican debt plan:
"The plan offered by House Republicans today is a short term deal that would wreak havoc on our economy. Our nation cannot afford to continue this debate for the next six months. We need a responsible plan that cuts spending, avoids a default to prevent economic disaster and allows us to focus on creating jobs and getting the economy in Nevada and across the nation back on track. We can balance our nation's budget by making the right choices and cutting wasteful spending, but the addition of this reckless amendment is nothing more than a smokescreen designed to cover the latest Republican effort to kill Medicare and slash Social Security benefits."
