Lee Votes No on "Boehner Plan"

Statement

Date: July 29, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) joined 178 Democrats and 22 Republicans in opposing Speaker John Boehner's plan to raise the debt ceiling while cutting $1.6 trillion in spending and calling for an additional debt ceiling vote in six months. The "Boehner Plan" passed the House of Representatives by a narrow margin of 218-210. Congresswoman Lee released the following statement:

"It is shameful that the Republican Party continues its drive to plunge our nation into default and our economy over the brink. And the bill that Speaker Boehner has unveiled today does exactly just that. Trying to balance the budget on the backs of the poor is morally wrong and economically bankrupt.

"We should not be wasting the American people's time and pushing our economy to the brink of a catastrophic crisis with legislation that we know is going nowhere. The Republicans need to stop holding our economy hostage and stop playing political games - we need a clean debt ceiling vote so that we can do the real work of creating jobs, protecting our most vulnerable, and growing our economy."
