Rep. Miller: Time for Action to Create Jobs and Meet Our Energy Needs

Press Release

Date: July 26, 2011
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Oil and Gas Trade

U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10) today voted in favor of the North American-Made Energy Security Act (H.R.1938), which passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 279 to 147. H.R.1938 would expedite a final decision on the Keystone XL pipeline, a project that would allow millions of barrels of Canadian oil supplies to flow into U.S. markets. The measure now heads to the U.S. Senate for consideration. Miller said:

"American families and American job creators are being hit hard by skyrocketing prices at the pump. Too many of our fellow citizens are looking for jobs that are seemingly impossible to find. Additionally, our nation's energy security is directly related to our national security. We currently import far too much of our energy needs from countries that are not friendly to America. We need to do more to take advantage of our domestic energy reserves and those of our friends to make our energy situation more stable.

"This measure helps to solve all of the challenges. It would pump up to 1.3 million barrels of oil a day from our friend and neighbor, Canada, into the U.S. economy. It would help create hundreds of thousands of new American jobs which are so desperately needed. And it would lower prices at the pump and help hard pressed American families and job creators."

Specifically, the legislation would require the President to issue a final Presidential Permit decision by November 1, 2011. Completion of the Keystone XL pipeline extension would increase America's access to safe and secure energy supplies. The project would more than double the current pipeline's capacity, bringing more than 1.3 million barrels per day into U.S. markets and creating more than 100,000 American jobs.
