Statement on Debt Increase Vote and Balanced Budget Amendment

Statement

Congressman Mike McIntyre released the following statement after his vote against the majority party's plan to increase the debt ceiling and his support for a Balanced Budget Amendment:

Vote Against Raising Debt Ceiling

"For way too long, partisan politics and continuous bickering have been dominating the atmosphere and work in Washington. Unfortunately, the majority party's debt ceiling plan only continues that and will not bring any finality to this debate. Our nation, financial markets, businesses, and families need certainty, and this plan does not do that. This short-term debt extension of only 6 months will further hurt our economy when we need to be doing all we can to put people back to work. We should pass a bi-partisan and long-term solution to this issue and put our country on a stable financial future."

Support For Balanced Budget Amendment

"I do strongly support a Balanced Budget Amendment, and I have co-sponsored several bills to accomplish that. The very first bill I signed onto after my election in 1997 was a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution, and I have supported a similar measure every single Congress. A balanced budget amendment would force our government to stop spending money that we do not have. When we do this, we would be able to stop increasing the debt and make sure that we balance our budget just like families, businesses, and 49 out of 50 states have to do. I look forward to our proceeding on a separate vote on the Balanced Budget Amendment as originally planned."
