As America continues to face challenges to our national security, we must ensure that we have leaders in Washington who are committed to preserving our military strength and to policies that will aggressively combat threats to our way of life, both at home and abroad.
In Afghanistan, the brave men and women of our armed forces face a difficult and complex mission to eradicate the presence of the Taliban, while simultaneously working to provide the security and infrastructure needed to prevent the war torn country from standing as a breeding ground for terrorism. As our military forges ahead with its challenging but crucially important work, it is incumbent upon the President and leaders in Congress to heed the advice of our commanders on the ground. In addition to seeking and following the counsel of Gen. Petraeus in shaping our strategy for Afghanistan, Congress and the White House must also make certain that our troops have the equipment and support that they need to carry out their mission.
As our military continues its sustained efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq, Washington must also stay on offense in the global war on terrorism and ensure that we adopt domestic policies that will keep the American people safe here at home. Jim is staunchly opposed to the transfer of terrorist detainees currently held in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to U.S. soil. Granting known terrorists, including the mastermind of 9/11, access to our civilian judicial system and domestic prisons, poses far too great of a risk to our national security. The complex in Guantanamo Bay is currently the only prison in the world that can safely detain individuals who pose a high-level risk to our national security and unless and until there is another viable, off-shore alternative, it must remain open.
