Westmoreland Statement on June Unemployment Numbers

Statement

Date: July 8, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Today, the Bureau of Labor and Statistics released June unemployment numbers. In the weakest month since September 2010, unemployment rose from 9.1 percent to 9.2 percent, with the economy adding a meager 18,000 jobs. That number is less than one-fifth the 110,000 jobs analysts had estimated would be added. This is the second month in a row unemployment has risen. Below is Congressman Westmoreland's statement.

"Today's disappointing unemployment numbers prove once again that the president's job-destroying policies of spend, tax, and borrow is absolutely not the answer to our economic woes. For an astonishing 29 months in a row, this country's unemployment rate has stayed above eight percent. Unfortunately, that number is even higher when you consider Americans who are underemployed and those who have just given up.

"These numbers are a reminder that job creation and economic growth need to be our top priority in Congress. House Republicans have passed nine separate bills that would do just that; yet Senate Democrats have refused to consider even one of them. And these nine bills are on top of the dozens of other bills that would cut federal spending, decrease burdensome bureaucracy, increase American-made energy, and reduce our national debt. So, while President Obama and Congressional Democrats demand tax increases on small businesses and more federal spending, House Republicans are fighting to create jobs and encourage economic growth. How many more months of staggering unemployment do we need before the president and Congressional Democrats will finally see that it is time to adopt a fiscally responsible, common-sense approach to tackling our economic troubles?" stated Westmoreland.
