Statement by Senator Tom Harkin E15 Label Another Step In Expanding Ethanol Market; Boosting Green Jobs

Statement

Date: June 28, 2011
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Energy

Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today issued the following statement after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released labelling requirements for sales of gasoline blends containing more than 10 and up to 15 percent ethanol, known as E15. Last summer, Harkin led a bipartisan meeting of senators with EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson and Department of Energy Deputy Secretary Daniel Poneman to discuss delays in the approval of E15 for vehicles. He is a senior member and former Chairman of the United States Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee.

"Expanding markets for ethanol is critical to reducing our dependence on foreign oil and boosting the jobs that grow our green economy. Each step we can take toward that goal is an achievement. I am encouraged by the new EPA label and the guidance released today on E15. This news is welcome in states like Iowa, but will benefit all states as consumers are given the option to choose domestic biofuels rather than imported oil. I thank the EPA and Administrator Jackson for their continued support for expanding the contributions of biofuels in America."
