Bloomberg Analysis Shows CT02 Among 10 Hardest-Hit Congressional Districts by House Republican Medicare Plan

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Joe Courtney today re-stated his opposition to the House Republican plan to privatize Medicare as a Bloomberg analysis of Census data showed that the Second District of Connecticut is one of the 10 Congressional districts hardest hit by the plan's changes. According to Bloomberg:

"Nine of the 10 districts throughout the U.S. with the most people age 45-54 are represented by Republicans, including Fitzpatrick, a Bloomberg analysis of census data shows. Those would be among the first Americans to no longer have Medicare as an open-ended entitlement, and instead would be given money to buy private insurance when they're eligible, under the plan."
The tenth district on the list is Courtney's Congressional district.

"This data shows in the clearest terms the devastating effects the House Republican plan will have on eastern Connecticut and our country," said Congressman Courtney. "The Ryan plan will immediately increase out-of-pocket costs for men and women in the 45-to-54 age bracket by as much as $286,000 over their lifetime -- an unforeseen cost that will be incredibly difficult to bear. Shifting costs to people under age 55 is not a solution to save Medicare; it ends Medicare."

According to data released by the House Committee on Education and Workforce, out-of-pocket costs for health care will increase exponentially with age for Americans under the Ryan plan. The costs represent additional savings men and women will need to set aside to offset increased out-of-pocket costs as a result of privatization of Medicare.

Congressman Courtney today spoke on the House floor about the analysis and the huge financial impact the plan would have on Americans under age 55
