Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05) issued the following statement in advance of President Obama's announcement of a planned troop withdrawal from Afghanistan:
"I look forward to hearing the President's proposal on the troop withdrawal from Afghanistan. While any withdrawal would reunite those troops with their families, I am concerned that an early drawdown at the wrong time could jeopardize the gains we have had so far.
"Having just visited our troops in Afghanistan two weeks ago, I have some concerns about that country's ability to defend against the Taliban and other terrorist groups. While the Afghan national army and police are growing in number and developing the professionalism necessary to secure their country, they still need assistance from U.S. forces.
"The President's call for troop withdrawal should not be driven by an arbitrary political timetable but instead by the security posture of the Afghan government and the recommendations of our military commanders." -- Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05)
