Statement from Newt Gingrich Reacting to Supreme Court 2nd Amendment Ruling.

Statement

Date: June 28, 2010
Issues: Judicial Branch

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich released the following statement in praise of the Supreme Court's majority ruling in McDonald vs. Chicago:

'The founding fathers believed that the right to bear arms was not simply to defend one's self, family, and property, but essential in defending freedom against the inherent danger of a tyrannical government. Their experience in the American Revolution, especially at Lexington and Concord, convinced them that an armed citizenry was an essential requirement for preserving freedom. Today's Supreme Court decision applying the 2nd amendment right to bear arms to state and local government is a vital reaffirmation of that liberty that first generation of Americans fought and died to protect.
