Fortenberry Opposes Debt Ceiling Increase

Statement

Date: May 31, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Jeff Fortenberry will vote today against increasing the debt ceiling.

"Simply raising the debt ceiling to allow more spending is not the right public policy," said Fortenberry. "While the government has an obligation to pay its debts, we must address the serious overspending and structural debt problems that have led to the current crisis. Any reasonable approach must be accompanied by budgetary controls to get America's fiscal house in order."

Fortenberry supports a variety of budgetary reform controls, including a balanced budget requirement, the presidential line item veto, and a biennial budgeting process.
