Statement from Congressman Rivera on Prime Minister Netanyahu's Address to Congress

Statement

Date: May 24, 2011
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman David Rivera (FL-25) released the following statement regarding Prime Minister Netanyahu's speech:

"The United States and Israel share many common ideals. Both countries share a commitment to human rights, democracy and freedom, which has forged a strong bond between our nations.

"Israel is a beacon of freedom in the Middle East, an area where liberty is especially stifled. Prime Minister Netanyahu made it clear in his speech what we well know, that while Israel has worked toward peace, their efforts have been met with rocket fire at the hands of Hezbollah and Hamas. While Israelis have withdrawn from the Gaza strip and made bold concessions to entice Palestine to negotiate, the Palestinian Authority has responded with terrorist attacks, and refuses to even deal directly with Israel.

"The United States needs Israel as an ally in the Middle East and in the War on Terror. We must stand by our only democratic ally in an otherwise hostile region. We must reject Palestine's efforts to circumvent the process of negotiating directly with Israel in their bid before the UN to be a recognized state. We must also work to ensure that Palestine recognizes Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state, as Prime Minister Netanyahu has shown that Israel is ready and willing to recognize a Palestinian state.

"We cannot afford to lose Israel's counsel and support. We must show our support and appreciation to Israel, and avoid strengthening Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran and terrorist groups worldwide."
