Gov. Perry Urges Texans to Prepare for 2011 Hurricane Season

Press Release

Location: Austin, TX

Gov. Rick Perry has proclaimed May 22-29, 2011, as Hurricane Preparedness Week in Texas to coincide with National Hurricane Preparedness Week. The governor and the Texas Division of Emergency Management are urging all Texans to prepare their homes and families for the 2011 hurricane season, which is predicted to be above-average by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Hurricane season officially begins on June 1 and lasts through Nov. 30.

"Few states face the variety and severity of threats we face here in Texas, and as we continue to deal with one of the worst wildfire seasons in recent memory, I urge all Texans to also be mindful of the dangers presented by the upcoming hurricane season," Gov. Perry said. "From the local responder to the State Operations Center, we have a first-rate team in place to meet all threats Texas faces, and they stand ready to respond at a moment's notice when a disaster strikes. Our residents must also do their part and take steps to protect their families and property to ensure we have a safe hurricane season this year."

Families should designate a place to go in case of evacuation, develop an emergency plan and compile a readiness kit of important supplies, including a battery-operated radio, flashlight, medication, non-perishable food items and water. Coastal Texans who will require transportation assistance during an evacuation are urged to call 2-1-1 as soon as possible and sign up with the Transportation Assistance Registry, which allows state and local officials to better coordinate transportation needs once a disaster occurs.

Gov. Perry recently discussed hurricane preparedness and other disaster response issues with local, state and federal officials as well as members of the emergency response community at the 2011 Texas Emergency Management Conference in San Antonio.
