Mississippi Senator says Liu's lack of experience is a strong concern

U.S. Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) today voted against proceeding to the nomination of Goodwin Liu to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

"I strongly oppose the nomination of Goodwin Liu and urge my colleagues to do the same," said Wicker. "The Constitutional duty of "advice and consent' given to the Senate is of profound importance, particularly when considering a lifetime appointment to a federal bench. In reviewing his qualifications, I am concerned about the lack of meaningful experience Professor Liu has had.

"Professor Liu has never tried a case before a jury, and has only argued once before a federal circuit court of appeals, said Wicker. "With no litigation or judicial experience, the Senate can only consider Liu's academic writing and public comments, which he has not fully disclosed. What has been disclosed reflects someone who believes in vast judicial powers to shape and rewrite the law, which is a threat to our tradition of American law."

A cloture vote, requiring 60 votes, was necessary to move forward. The cloture vote failed 52 -- 43.
